January 27, 1997 - A Mature Point of View
by Tom DesRochers
To those who asked what the "rocks" is all about, take out your handy French-English dictionary and translate my last name. It means "Rocks". What the hell did you think it meant ? It's sort of a universal family nickname. Thanks for asking though.
On behalf of the Mature Students Association, I'd like to welcome aboard two of the most charming young women at OZ (quite the distinction, to be sure) Nicole Lawson nd Andrea Reinke who turned 26 on the very same day, a couple of weeks back. You're not getting older, ladies, just better. Did Admissions not tell everyone that the Mature Students is the only club with MANDATORY membership for anyone who doesn't graduate before their 26th birthday ? It's a fact. We're going to get ALL of you...just a matter of time. So if any of you knows of someone who has their 26th coming up, drop me a note so I can embarass the hell out of them too. (More geezers, I love it!)
For anyone who is interested in a bit of exercise, we are reviving pickup basketball on Wednesday and Friday afternoons at the Tait complex. Here's how it works; 1 on 5 scrimmage, Tom D. versus the young pups. You might think this a bit unfair...so, OK, I'll spot you 5 buckets. Just kidding. If you're interested, come out and burn off a few calories. It would probably be a good idea to check with Darren Thorne for pre-game confirmation; Darren's the guy with the basketball. (If he doesn't show, we're screwed). We played a couple of times with knotted gym socks, but it just isn't the same.
TRIVIA TIME. I did it again, didn't I? If I make them too easy, I'll be buying drinks until July. About 40 people knew that Pierre Trudeau was the one who said fuddle-duddle (He denied it was "F**k off!") but nobody guessed who it was directed at. You won't find it in the history books, but every once in a while, you see a film clip of the Conservative M.P. Lincoln Alexander blowing his stack at the P.M. (His Excellency has a temper). Guess you people are just too damn young. Ok, here's an easy one:
...which popular 1960's cartoon featured regular characters "D.J." and a beatnik known as "the Wild Man" ? For those of you who don't know what a beatnik is, they were rebellious upper-middle class kids who wore berets, grew goatees, played bongos, sat around coffee houses sipping espresso, listening to jazz music, reading poetry and protesting the establishment... sounds a lot like the Law Union, doesn't it? Anyway, be cool and hang loose man...and we'll catch you swingin' cats on the flip-side. Seeya, daddyo...
