Athletics were always a huge part of Tom's life. Growing up he loved to hike, swim, play hockey, lacrosse and baseball. During his teen years, Tom discovered basketball, a sport he excelled at and continued to play throughout his life. When he graduated from Penetang Secondary School, Tom received his athletic letter, an honour since only two were awarded that year.

In 1979 Tom won first place in the Georgian Bay H.O.R.S.E. Competition. This competition is won based on an individual's ability to shoot baskets. Tom received many awards for playing and coaching basketball.

As a teen, Tom also discovered curling...a sport both his father and grandfather enjoyed and excelled in. Tom continued to curl into his adult years and played competitively, both with the York Regional Police team and with the South Simcoe Major League.

In his early twenties, Tom took up Tae Kwon Do. He participated in many competitions and earned his red belt.

From the time Tom was a young boy, he enjoyed fishing in the waters of Georgian Bay. This was no doubt a relaxing diversion from his normally hectic schedule. Tom and my husband Phil spend many days fishing and once (at the cottage) dove to collect enough clams for them to make a big pot of chowder!

Tom's Athletic Letter

Tom was honoured for his participation in and contributions to the sport of curling. The York Regional Police Association Bonspiel was renamed the "Tom DesRochers Memorial Bonspiel" and the South Simcoe Major League created a "Most Sportsman-Like" trophy in Tom's name that will be awarded annually to a member of the league.
