In the spring of 1982, Tom had the good luck to have met someone who would forever change his life. Her name was Kathy or "Kat" as was Tom's more endearing nickname for her.
Tom and Kathy shared a special bond that was evident to us all from the start. I remember how different he seemed to me after he met Kathy. He was more outgoing and always seemed happy. They seemed to compliment each other in a most wonderful way.
A few years later, on June 7, 1986, Kathy and Tom were married. This was to be the beginning of many wonderful years together.
When Tom became ill and was hospitalized last January, 1999, Kathy almost never left his side. She lovingly did what she could to keep him comforted and comfortable, always considering his wants and feelings. It had to have helped him a great deal, just knowing she was always there and knowing he was so very loved.
It will always bring a smile to my lips whenever I think of Tom and Kathy together. The way Tom always managed to make Kathy laugh (i.e., by serving up a green beer every St. Patrick's Day, chuckling as though it was the first time he'd done so!) and the way they could look at one another and communicate without words. I am so very sorry that Kathy lost Tom so, so soon, but I know she treasures the time they did get to share.
It warms my heart to know that although Tom's time on this Earth was shortened, he was able to spend many of his years with someone with whom he shared such a special love.
